Bornholm

Island Challenge – The construction of your holiday homes: zero waste in 2032?

The hundred thousand visitors of Bornholm temporarily live in holiday homes. You may not be aware of this, but the construction and maintenance of these homes is a major environmental impact of Bornholm’s tourism. Bornholm aims for zero waste in 2032, and this not only affects household waste but also the extremely important construction activity. A key initiative for more circular construction is the BOMCØKER – Bornholm Material Bank and Community Space.
To organise and think out the best way for this initiative, we need support from the large tourist community. Do you have ideas to optimise zero waste for construction? Would you be willing to co-fund this initiative?

What is Bornholm-Greenmapper Friends?

GreenMapper Friends is a scientific experiment with geographics in focus. It provides insights on how people cherish nature and what is the best for nature. In the case of Bornholm, we invite people as “citizen scientists” to explore how to effectively use the Material Bank to achieve Zero Waste 2032 through three phases: (1) a polling experiment to hear opinions and find consensus (see Step 2); (2) an online roundtable meeting for stakeholders (see Step 3); (3) a virtual experiment to explore possibilities to launch pledge fundings (see Step 4).

How can I participate in the project?

This experiment works with Greenmapper. Everybody in Greenmapper first maps four of their favourite nature-related places on the map. Places with nature that they find attractive, valuable, or important.

Why do we ask for these four places?

First of all, these systematic data help protect the nature and landscapes you value. The open-access data and the scientific analyses based upon them can better inform landowners, policymakers and the community of fans about nature-related places that are highly valued.

Second, by mapping these places, you can choose to become part of the community of fans of those areas and provide support to them. Support with ideas or with financial funding. Regarding Bornholm, we are interested in your ideas for supporting BOMCØKER – Bornholm Material Bank and Community Space.

Step 1: Map four favorite nature spots on the map via Greenmapper

To start mapping your four favourite nature places, you first mark on a map where you live. For privacy, you don’t mark your exact address, but approximately where you live. You can watch the short animation video to explain how this works.

Then you draw four favourite nature-related places on the map that are attractive, valuable or important to you. A place near where you live, a place in the region, a place somewhere in the country and finally a place somewhere in the world.
This drawing on the map is technically the trickiest part, so please take a moment to watch the animation video. Here we explain the technique of mapping your places. Once you know that, the rest is easy.

Step 2: Participate in the discussion of the Material Bank

Once you have placed the locations on the map, you will enter the GreenMapper Bornholm community. There you will find the so called Pol.is discussion. This discussion runs via voting on statements (‘Agree’, ‘Disagree’ and ‘Uncertain’). You can also add new statements yourself if your feel your ideas have not yet been voiced, and then the community will vote on these.

Ultimately, we visualise what everyone agrees on and what they don’t, and whether there are different groups. We will keep you informed of the results.

Step 3: Become a ‘citizen scientist’ and participate in an online roundtable meeting

Once our community reaches a sufficient number of friends, we will randomly select 10-20 participants for an online roundtable meeting, where fans, Bornholm partner organisations, and experts will discuss in depth the options for future action.

One of the future actions is pledge funding to support the Material Bank. Firstly, we will discuss during the roundtable meeting. Then we will adjust the proposal according to stakeholders’ opinions. Eventually we will launch a virtual pledge funding experiment for the public to examine the feasibility.

Step 4: Participate in the virtual pledge funding

After the roundtable meeting, we will launch this participatory experiment for the public. We ask you to respond to specific funding applications towards the Material Bank.

Disclaimer!

We feel we should give a warning! Yes, Greenmapper is a user-friendly web app designed for the general public. Still, it remains scientific software, with very limited funding and a very small technical support team. When compared to a simple written survey, Greenmapper stands out as a visually appealing and interactive tool. When compared to big tech applications, you may still find it far less fluent and user-friendly. Bear with us and our small team. Our means are limited, but our efforts, and yours (!), are noble.
